Gain

Selecting "Gain" from the "Mix Menu" causes the SM2 to adjust the gain of one channel as a function of the second channel. For example, an aircraft is set up so that the aileron control is very sensitive when a transmitter switch or knob is in one extreem position, and less sensitive when the switch or knob is in the opposite extreem position. If  switch is used then the gain acts like a dual-rate feature available on most aircraft transmitters. If  knob is used then the sensitivity can be adjusted in very fine increments.

Options to have Channel 1 set Channel 2 gain or vice-versa will be displayed near the top of the SM2 Application when the Gain mode is selected as shown below:

Channel 1 sets the gain of channel 2 in the above illustration. In this case, the Channel 1 servo position represents the gain setting for Channel 2. The gain setting can be thought of as a real number between the values of minus one to one. That number will be used as a multiplier and applied to the Channel 2 position.

  1. When the Channel 1 servo arm is in a straight horizontal position then the gain is zero, which will prevent the Channel 2 servo from moving at all.
  2. When the Channel 1 servo is in its 100% counter-clockwise position then the gain is equal to one, and Channel 2 servo will move as if there was no influence from Channel 1.
  3. When the Channel 1 servo is in its 100% clockwise position then the gain is equal to minus one, and Channel 2 servo will move as if there was no influence from Channel 1, but it will move in an opposite direction.

The gain can actually be greater than one or less than minus one if the Channel 1 servo position is greater than 100% or less than -100%. The gain control is linear and can be set anywhere in between these extreem values.

The Simulation Mode is very useful when gain mixing is performed. The best way to learn how this works is to experiment with the SM2 Applciation. The SM2 Application is distributed with configuration examples that address gain settings. It is recomended that these examples be loaded and evaluated using the SM2 Application in Simulation Mode to get a better feel for how Gain Mode works by adjusting various settings and observing the response.
